East and Northeast
A WAITING GAME
May 17, 2009
We decided to return to Charleston, SC to watch ”over the shoulders” as the repairs are finished. Of course, not much is being done over the weekend so we’ve been sightseeing. A ferry ride to Ft. Sumter provided fascinating history. The brick fort was built from 1829 to 1860 on a man-made island in Charleston [...]
A BUMP IN THE ROAD
It was a day like any other day…leaving a beautiful spot in Georgia on a cloudy day, headed for South Carolina. There were no Interstates on the route today. The state and county roads were fine, although we did have to detour. A few days before, there had been a tornado that toppled trees [...]
ALBANY, GA to APPLING, GA
We will consider this campground a real gem. Wildwood Park is a county park, away from interstates, in northeast Georgia near Augusta. It is on a huge lake, great for bass fishing, with campsites that back right up to the water (but high enough to be out of danger).
MILTON, FL to ALBANY, GA
Moving right along, we traveled through pecan groves and more live oaks to Albany, Georgia. At the Albany RV Resort we found really long, wide sites under tall trees. It was a lovely spot to spend a night.
SUMMERDALE, AL to MILTON, FL
It has been more than five years since we left the Florida Panhandle. Our first workamping job was at Gulf Pines KOA, and we have nothing but good memories of that time. So, here we were again! The campground is the same, with very large pull-through sites, spotless restrooms, and friendly staff. The only [...]
PASCAGOULA, MS to SUMMERDALE, AL
Our goal, on this trip, is to spend the night in the Hitchhiker fifth-wheel in as many states as possible. From Mississippi to Alabama is not a very long day. By noon we were in Summerdale, Alabama at the Rainbow Plantation, which is another of the Escapee Parks. It’s a nice place with large [...]
NEW ORLEANS, LA to PASCAGOULA, MS
Pascagoula! The name sounds so familiar. Maybe it’s because in 1973 two men reported that they’d been abducted by aliens in a UFO. Or, maybe it’s because of the Ray Stevens’ song called Mississippi Squirrel Revival where the First Self-Righteous Church of Pascagoula was disrupted by a child’s squirrel. In any case, our geocaching [...]
LAFAYETTE, LA to NEW ORLEANS, LA,
New Orleans is one place Carol had never been, so, it was on the itinerary for this trip. We drove to the New Orleans KOA and settled in a nice back-in site. The time was just after noon and we bought tickets, at the campground for a bus tour of New Orleans, scheduled to leave [...]
LIVINGSTON, TX to LAFAYETTE, LA
A short way from Livingston, near Koentze, TX, we stopped at the Big Thicket National Wildlife Refuge. Today, we did not hike the lovely trails as we had done in the past but, stretched our legs in the Visitor Center and around the outside perimeter. Back in the vehicles, we were soon navigating I-10 [...]
VICTORIA, TX to LIVINGSTON, TX
The day began cloudy but, brightened as we moved along. Texas flat, Texas cattle were what we looked at out the window. At the town of El Campo we detoured in for coffee and a diet Coke while we viewed several of the large murals painted on buildings. They showed the history of the [...]
